Older Seminole houses need more careful cleaning

Seminole grew almost overnight during the oil boom, and some of the houses near downtown still date from that rush. Many are wood frame bungalows with hardwood floors and old tile in the bathroom. Around them sit brick ranch houses built after the war, and newer homes fill in toward the edges of town. Each kind of house gets dirty in its own way, so we do not clean them all the same.

Hardwood that old has usually been sanded more than once, so the finish on top is often thin. Soaking it with a wet mop pushes water into the seams and dulls the wood. We use a damp mop and dry as we go. Old bathroom tile has grout that holds dirt deep down, and a fast wipe leaves it gray. We scrub that grout, because a bathroom only looks clean when the grout lines do.

In the brick ranch houses, the kitchen is usually the hard part. Years of cooking leave a sticky film on the cabinet doors near the stove, and that film grabs dust. A dry cloth just smears it around, so we cut the grease first and then wipe. Newer homes around town often have open floor plans with vinyl plank floors. Vinyl plank looks fine until low light hits it, and then every streak shows. We mop it with clean water and change the water often.

Oklahoma wind carries red dirt inside

The ground around Seminole is red dirt, and it does not stay outside. It comes in on boots and dog paws, and the wind pushes it under doors. Vacuumed often, it comes right up. Left for a few weeks, it works down into light carpet and leaves an orange tint. On tile it settles into the grout and turns it rusty brown. The entry rugs and the floor inside the back door take the most work here.

Every spring the oaks around Seminole drop pollen that coats porches and window sills in yellow dust. It follows people inside on clothes and shoes. By summer the air conditioning runs all day, and the vents blow a fine gray dust onto ceiling fans and the tops of door frames. A quick clean skips those high spots, and that is where dust piles up fastest. We reach them on every visit.

Spring storms bring mud into the house. A hard rain can turn a yard to red mud in an hour, and it gets tracked across the kitchen before anybody notices. Wind is the other problem in the older houses near downtown, where wood windows and doors often do not seal tight anymore. A fine line of grit builds up along the sills after a windy week. We wipe the sills and window tracks on every visit so it never gets deep.

A business needs a different clean than a house. Restrooms get heavy use and need a full clean every visit. Plenty of those older buildings have vinyl tile floors, the kind that are meant to be waxed. Floor cleaning and waxing are both services we offer. Old wax turns yellow over time and traps dirt between the coats, and no amount of mopping fixes that. The fix is to take the old wax off and clean the bare tile first. New wax on a clean floor looks right, and the next mopping is easier.
